Playing a Game of Hide the Ball

Woof woof woof. Woof woof woof. Woof woof woof.

Woof woof bark! Bark! Bark bark bark!

Translated from Dog:

I love playing a game of Hide the Ball. Especially in hotel rooms. Although sometimes the ball rolls out from under the bed, where Mommy and Daddy can get it.

Which means I have to scramble out and get it back, quick! Ahhh! Must get the ball back quick!

All Work and No Play Makes Mocha a Mopey Dog

Mocha sometimes sits at our feet while we work, waiting patiently for us to play with him. Did I say patiently? I meant impatiently.

He’ll paw at us, jump up and down to try to catch our attention, or curl up and mope. Here he is moping. Sometimes Mommy breaks and leans over to pet him. Then Mocha is all happy wags. But when Daddy is busy, very little can break his attention (except for stealing an occasional photo, heh). All Mocha can do in those cases is mope mope mope.

Scary Beeper

Mommy’s beeper went off a few times, scaring the bejeezus out of poor lil Mocha. After hearing it beep, he ran off with his tail between his legs and hid under the couch. It took him a while to muster the courage to come back to the world of the uncouched again.

Relaxing Under a Chair at the Cafe

IMG_0338

Today, Mocha joined us at the cafe again and took his usual spot under a chair. Note his collapsible red Ruff Wear Quencher Dog Bowl, which comes in real handy on trips like this. Fortunately, all cafes are nice enough to give you some nice cool water for your dog.

Dog-Friendly Hotel in San Diego

We found a nice, dog-friendly hotel in San Diego for our trip – Crown City Inn. It’s a quaint little place on Coronado Island, right off a main road. They give you a food & water bowl for your dog, a bag of doggie treats, and feature some nice patches of grass out in front for potty breaks.

What’s great about Coronado Island is that practically the entire island is dog friendly. We took Mocha for a walk down the street and came across a bunch of dog-friendly cafes. Even the dog beach isn’t too far from here.

And oh Mocha… will you ever stop hiding under furniture? You scaredy dog you.

Scaredy Dog

There was a thunderstorm last week. A loud cackle of thunder sent Mocha racing under the futon. Ever since then, he seems to like hanging out under various pieces of furniture. Like the futon, our chairs, the bed, etc.

Then there was the time I punished him for barking. I read somewhere that using a spray bottle to squirt an uncomfortable mist at his nose is gentle negative reinforcement. Except that Mocha seems to freak out more than other dogs. When I squirted him, he raced under the futon.

I later read that doing this is bad, so I’ve since stopped it. But the damage, sadly, seems to be done. We now have a dog that seems to find safe haven hiding under the furniture. If there are loud sounds outside, or hears something that prompts a bark, he ducks under the futon. Rats.

I’ll admit, it was funny at first, seeing him combat crawl under there. It’s not as funny anymore though. Now we feel kind of bad about it. Guess we’ll need plenty of positive reinforcement to teach him out of this behavior. Fortunately, it isn’t terribly frequent. We just don’t want Mocha to become a scaredy dog.
