Exercising at Home with the Dog Backpack

Since the dog backpack worked so well yesterday, we thought we could try using it back home.

Our plan:

Load up the pockets with cans of soda to weigh it down, then play fetch down the hallway.

The result:

Mocha loved it! He loves fetch in any form, outdoors or indoors, so of course he loved it. He didn’t quite understand the effect of the added bulk to his body though. Namely, he’d dive under the bed and get stuck because the backpack was too large. Or he’d try to squeeze through a narrow opening and get stopped in his tracks. At one point, he tried to turn a corner and smacked into the wall so hard that a can of soda almost exploded. Damn this boy has a lot of energy.

By the end of the fetch session, he was pretty pooped. Unfortunately, he recovered fairly quickly. That means this might not be an effective part of his daily exercise, but it could augment it well.

You Throw Ball Now?

“You throw ball now?” asks Mocha with his eyes. “Now? How about now?” We hit the dog beach again today. Then we struck gold and found a ball lying in the sand. “How about now? Throw ball now?” Mocha just loves it. He can’t get enough of it. And he has the funniest little behavior – he lifts one of his front paws every time he’s ready to run after the ball. “Now? How about now?”

Once he fetches the ball, he drops it in the sand and stares back at me, begging – no, daring – me to get the ball and throw it again. Then it becomes a game of keep-away. That little mischievous rascal.

He loves playing catch so much that he’s a bit oblivious to other dogs around him. And sometimes even the waves crashing into him too. “Waves? What waves? Ima go get the ball!”

Fetch!

Happy at the Dog Park

I love this photo. Mocha’s resting on the grass after a fun day of fetch at the dog park.
