Driving in the Convertible

After a nice day at the dog beach, we drove back with the convertible’s top down. Mocha freaked out when the convertible top activated and started to close up. But once the top was down and the wind was in his face, he was cool. Cool as a dog in a convertible can be – which is damn cool!

You Throw Ball Now?

“You throw ball now?” asks Mocha with his eyes. “Now? How about now?” We hit the dog beach again today. Then we struck gold and found a ball lying in the sand. “How about now? Throw ball now?” Mocha just loves it. He can’t get enough of it. And he has the funniest little behavior – he lifts one of his front paws every time he’s ready to run after the ball. “Now? How about now?”

Once he fetches the ball, he drops it in the sand and stares back at me, begging – no, daring – me to get the ball and throw it again. Then it becomes a game of keep-away. That little mischievous rascal.

He loves playing catch so much that he’s a bit oblivious to other dogs around him. And sometimes even the waves crashing into him too. “Waves? What waves? Ima go get the ball!”

Fetch!

The Coronado Island Dog Beach

Happy day at the dog beach on Coronado Island in San Diego! Mocha’s in the water!

Well, almost. Waves still freak him out a bit.

But with a bit of coaxing and encouragement, he’s wading in the water happily.

He’ll even run back and forth with us, like it’s a game. Hurray, our little fellah is starting to love the water!

The dog beach on Coronado Island is by far the best dog beach we’ve seen yet. Along with the usual dog waste bags is a fountain and hose for washing off your dog. That alone totally won us over.

Sounds totally obvious to me that a dog beach should have a place to wash your dog. Yet, other dog beaches I’ve seen don’t have one. Not that I’m being unappreciative, mind you. I’m really thankful the kind beach officials zoned a portion of the land for dogs. Having a way to hose down your dog is just such a great addition though.

Hmm. I wonder if a portable dog-washing truck or kit would be a good small business?

Mocha’s First Dog Beach Visit

Today was Mocha’s first ever visit to the Pacific Ocean. At least, we assumed so, since he was found far inland. Also, he is terrified of the water. Like “ZOMG Whatisthatstuff?? Getmeouttahere!!” terrified. He planted his butt into the sand and would not get any closer than where he was in this photo.

And he’s supposed to be part Labrador Retriever, right? Riiight.

So after today, we are going to devise a plan to slowly introduce him to the water. We love the beach and Labs are supposed to love the beach, so dagnabit, we’re going to make him love the beach too!
